Ganoderma lucidum is a mushroom known for its health and longevity properties, and is the active supplement found in Organo Gold(r) coffees. It is used in traditional Chinese medicine, and across Asian, and is gaining popularity in America. It is a large flat mushroom, also known as the Reishi mushroom or the Lingzi mushroom. The Ganoderma Lucidum mushroom has a fan like cap which gives it a unique look. The herb can be found in several forms, including extracts, powders and capsules.

“Among cultivated mushrooms, G. lucidum is unique in that its pharmaceutical rather than nutritional value is paramount,” says the NCBI.  The National Center for Biotechnology (NCBI) provides information on biomedical and genomic information for health and science.

Ganoderma Lucidum is available commercially in a variety of forms and from different parts of the mushroom including the fruit body, mycelia and spores. The texture is that of wood and its coloring can vary from red to yellow to white. Spores are located under the mushroom cap from the gills or pores and are the germinating portion of the mushroom. Some companies produce Ganoderma Lucidum using plastic bags, which is a less potent, if not ineffective sourcing of the mushrooms medicinal properties. Just as any growing herb, the more natural it is, the better it will be.

These healthier coffees source the organic ganoderma lucidum to add as a nutritional supplement to the variety of beverages they offer. They create a fine, tasteless powder by sterilizing, drying and processing the mushroom. The coffee, teas and hot cocoa products are then available in a variety of flavors and are available in single servings as either a packet or recyclable plastic cup for single serving brewing machines.

Some studies have shown the following benefits of the Ganoderma Lucidum mushroom, as evidenced by use of the herb:

  • Control of blood glucose levels
  • Anti-oxidation
  • Reduces risks of certain cancers
  • Strengthening the immune system
  • Liver support
  • Treating conditions of metabolic syndrome
  • Lowering bad cholesterol

Supplementing Ganoderma lucidum reduces the chances of metastasis, which is when cancer spreads to another part of the body.” source:, a website for scientific research on Nutrition and Health.

Additional studies show that Ganoderma, used alongside additional medications, can add anti-cancer properties and support those suffering from fatigue and hepatitis.
